What Can We Do About Our Planet

Answers may surprise you

“The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.”

Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, 1994

What I am about to tell you draws on a range of my intuitive senses, both in gaining an insight into the flow of the universe, and in tuning in to ancient teachings.

In face of all the needless suffering created by humans beings on this planet – war, poverty, injustice, oppression, exploitation – we may wonder if we can ever find a solution where we can live together in peace and harmony. We may despair how people of goodwill never seem to have their voices listened to, how the cruel and the greedy seem to triumph. It’s enough to make anyone give up. And many do.

What Can We Do About Our Planet

But they are wrong.

There are forces at work of unimaginable power that guide our evolution

We need to understand how the evolution of this planet, with its seemingly existential threats like climate change and weapons of mass destruction, actually works. Here’s the first surprise:

Humans are not now, nor have they ever been, in charge of this planet.

There are forces at work of unimaginable power that guide our evolution, keeping it within certain parameters. Some would see these as part of a Divine plan for our universe. However we understand them, my sense is that they are supreme. All the billionaires, dictators and megalomaniacs who believe they are all-powerful are in reality operating within a cosmic script. We can see it rather like teachers watching over kids in a playground. They get up to all sorts, but the adults will intervene when things look like they are getting out of hand. At other times they let the children work things out between themselves.

So we can exercise our free will, both to create and destroy, but it is not limitless in its scope. We are being guided along the path of our spiritual evolution. Which brings us to the next point:

This planet is on an inevitable, irresistible path of evolution.

We are on an evolutionary path towards a higher consciousness. What we experience as darkness is what lies behind us. If we choose to be drawn back into the dark, it causes us and those around us needless suffering and can slow our progress but it cannot stop it. We are facing an irresistible force that in the end will sweep all before it. There is no real battle between light and dark: enlightenment is inevitable.

Dr Martin Luther King, a genuine prophet of our times, spelled it out very clearly in a speech many have heard but few have seemed to have actually taken in:

I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land!

Yes, we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. Dr King did not say “I hope we get” or “It would be nice if we got”. He was clear: “will get.”

Which brings us to the next issue:

The question is not whether we get to our Promised Land but what role we choose to play in it.

Those forces that determine our destiny act through us humans as they act through nature. We can choose to work for the good of humanity, we can do nothing or we can work against it. It will not affect the outcome of the planet or humanity but it will affect ours. We have all been given a job to do on this earth. It does not mean we all have to become inspirational leaders or opinion formers. It very often means bringing up children with all our love and wisdom or doing whatever job we have with care and integrity. It all counts. It all adds to the sum of positive energy on our planet.

What Can We Do About Our Planet

And what of the times we or others do harm? There are a couple of things to understand about the capacity to do evil. First, its power is in the end always more limited than that of good. It’s like a rowing boat going along a river: if it’s in the same direction as the current, it can speed along easily. Against the current, it struggles. And this is a Divine current, the flow of our spiritual evolution. Secondly, people who are difficult, damaging or destructive in our personal lives or in the world at large may be there as “teachers”, alerting us to the consequences of our behaviour, awakening us to the need to change. Everything in the end serves a Divine purpose.

What we have in our power to change is how and at what cost we reach our Promised Land. To give a historical example, at the end of World War I with is unprecedented, industrialised slaughter, the U.S President Woodrow Wilson came up with a plan for peace. In a speech in 1917, he outlined its key principle, “a peace without victory”:

“Victory would mean peace forced upon the loser, a victor’s terms imposed upon the vanquished. It would be accepted in humiliation, under duress, at an intolerable sacrifice, and would leave a sting, a resentment, a bitter memory upon which terms of peace would rest, not permanently, but only as upon quicksand. Only a peace between equals can last.”

Everything in the end serves a Divine purpose

Wilson was dismissed as an “idealist”. The Treaty of Versailles that followed was punitive and within twenty years another World War had broken out.

What Can We Do About Our Planet

It doesn’t need to be like this. We all can contribute something to a positive and peaceful path forward for humanity and our planet. But be sure, we will, as Martin Luther King said, get there. Our sense of connection between ourselves, this planet and the universe, is innate: it has been there since the moment of creation, nearly 14 billion years ago. In its own time, it will become our lived reality.
