Another time, another place...
I am sitting in a circle with about a dozen others in a room. I notice none of us have distinct faces but rather visors like the helmets on space suits. There was someone seated at some distance on a golden throne. Although we appeared to be an anonymous group, each one of us had an individual contribution to make. We had a particular energy, like the cord of a harp or a lyre. These were being plucked like a musical instrument. In a way I did not understand – or need to understand – it was part of a kind of cosmic orchestra that guided the evolution of the universe.

Reconstruction of the inner vision by Erebus - Giorgio De Michele
All this took place somewhere very far from this planet at a time when galaxies were still forming. How I know all this comes from being in an altered state of consciousness: not hypnosis, not in a state induced by narcotics, still less imagination which has a quite different feel to it. I can best describe it as opening my ‘inner eye’ so it can see and explore other dimensions. It feels almost like watching a film. While I am experiencing all this, I am aware of my surroundings here on earth. We are not limited to where we happen to be physically. Our minds can travel through many dimensions.
An Alien Planet Called Earth
Many astronomers accept that it is almost certain that life exists somewhere else in the universe, if only because of the sheer number of other planets. And where there is life, there is spirit. Beings with souls that live and die billions of light years from where we are. But we do not need to rely solely on mathematical models of probability or the tentative evidence found by astronomers. We can use our heightened senses as in the scene described above. And some beings on this planet can use memory.
Most souls living on this planet have done so for many millennia, living through cycles of life, death and rebirth on earth multiple times. They have an ancient soul memory going back to the earliest times of our human ancestors. Their knowledge of the workings of this world is instinctive. Drawing on my own experience and the insights of spiritual teachers, I am aware that a minority of souls born here come from other planets, arriving through cycles of reincarnation that can cross even galaxies. Their home worlds are very different: the flow of life is more harmonious, beautiful, radiant, in ways that would seem very strange to most humans. These souls work with all the enlightened individuals on earth towards the highest destiny of humankind. At a spiritual level, evolution is always interplanetary.
Your world, my world, our world
Though these souls bring something very special, it comes with difficulties. For them, the atmosphere is very dense on this planet. It can feel like wading through treacle. Humans have a history of pitiless violence and ruthless exploitation, which can be hard to stomach. So living here can be a struggle. The ordinary business of daily life can feel overwhelming. There is the gnawing sense of not belonging, of never really fitting in. Interplanetary souls can be found amongst some of the most creative and inspirational people on earth and also amongst addicts and the mentally unstable. Sometimes they are both. Yet challenging as the mission can be, at a soul level, it is always a choice. As it was my choice.
Let me tell you about my memory of my home. It’s a green planet, the size of your Jupiter, with great lakes and arcs of light along which we travel. We have two moons which never set. If you visited our planet, you would see vast open spaces because we do not need complex material structures to exist. We have learned to create what we need from within ourselves. Our bodies are luminescent, with colours shifting according to our mood and activity. But what really sets us apart from humans is that there are no masks between us, no walls of fear or aggression, no pretence, just the intimacy of souls.

Here on earth, I have seen – and done – many wonderful things, terrible things and much in between. Our kind have lived here on this planet for so long that over time we have learned the local customs, speak the human language, settled down, even had families...but it has never been our world, our home, our language.
And yet.
At the level of the soul, we are one. Earthbound humans, outsiders, we are just expressions of one universal soul. That is the great truth that I try to remind myself of. We’re just souls wandering through the cosmos, experiencing different realms of consciousness.
Interplanetary migration and UFOs
We are not the only visitors. Interplanetary souls have been slipping in unnoticed for millennia, born into human bodies, and now form a significant minority of the earth’s population. Meanwhile many people have focused on the visitors that they think they can see and even have encounters with – real or imaginary: UFOs or Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs).
Some at least are real enough. And their presence here begs the question ‘Why’? There is not necessarily one single answer, still less a reassuring one. To beings from other planets, earth is like a one of those shady neighbourhoods you can get in big cities - high crime rates, violence, drug abuse. So our planet attracts various kinds of outsiders: beings who come to do good, like our street pastors and social workers in deprived areas; and equally beings who come to exploit people’s vulnerability, as our criminal gangs do. Perhaps a few simply come to observe. Either way, the more spiritually aware we are, the better we cope with any challenges, extraterrestrial or not.

But the fate of our planet does not lie with UFOs or humans or interplanetary souls. There are forces beyond all these that guide earth along its evolutionary path, setting certain boundaries, containing the madness that passes for normality on this planet. Our choice, wherever we originally come from, is to decide what role we are going to play in this cosmic adventure working itself out in an obscure corner of a galaxy.
Which brings me back to one of my earliest memories.
I was in a cave. It was by the sea. I could see and almost feel the sand on the floor. I was writing on the wall of the cave. Sitting beside me were the very earliest hominids, maybe homo erectus, closer to ape than human in appearance. I was drawing something on the wall, trying to tell them that we did not come from this planet, that our souls were from elsewhere...
