Introduction
Spirituality, unlike religion, cannot be easily classified. By its very nature, it has no fixed doctrine. It is both universal, coming from a source of spiritual light that fills the entire cosmos; and it is personal, as each one of us gives it a unique flavour. Yet we can also see people drawn to expressions of spirituality that share much in common. Single streams flow into each other to become rivers that eventually pour into the cosmic ocean. This is one such example: the Spirituality of Earth and Stone. Perhaps it will resonate with you.
Jane Jackson: The Spirit of Earth and Stone
I feel very connected to the earth and the stone circles. As if I am part of them: and I don’t go into nature, I exist as nature, with nature, and will always respect it because of the wisdom it carries. When I sit quietly and go inside myself, wisdom from the land will come to me. If I get disconnected from nature because of modern life, my heart feels a million miles away. When this happens, I know it is time to reconnect. I do not look at a tree and think of it as an object. Somehow, it’s connected to my soul, and the connection feels alive along with the land, as if we are a living part of each other.

The earth and everything in it feel as if they have their own energy, their own frequency and I just need to tune into that. Different places give different energies. If I’m in a clump of trees, I have a feeling of excitement and I get a deep sense of peace. When I have the time to connect into the trees, my body feels light and tingly. If I’m in a stone circle, they have a different energy to the trees. Sarsen Stones, like at Avebury and Stonehenge, have a very strong energy, almost like looking at an old oak tree. If you go to the RollRight Stones, they’re limestone, it’s lighter, and that energy feels much more like it bends in the wind, so it’s more like a weeping willow tree to me.
The energy of a river feels very light and bubbly. When it’s a waterfall, it feels excited. When it’s meandering along, it’s moving in a different way but it still feels happy. With a lake, it depends on what it surrounded by. If it’s surrounded by countryside, mountains, it’s almost like it captures the energy, it’s got a depth to it, rather than a lake that is surrounded by buildings, which is still lovely, but does not have the same expansiveness as the one with. If you get a place with too many people who are not tuned into the aliveness of nature, the energy can subside.
Rituals & Rhythms
I mark the celebrations of the seasons, the Summer and Winter Solstice, the Spring and Autumn Equinox, and the mid quarters between the Equinoxes. Because everything feels alive, it feels like it wants to be respected. The energy changes with time, focusing on the periods in the year. In the summer solstice, I will give thanks for the harvest. With the winter solstice, it’s about going inside and being quiet and resting.
At other times when I don’t have a formal ritual, I go and find a place that is quiet, that feels spiritual, and I sit in the silence. I take in the energy, and I try and connect into the frequency of what is going on, on an energetic level. For instance, if I walk round a stone circle feeling all the energy in the stones I’ll ask inwardly ‘which stone would like me to sit next to it?’ And then tune into that frequency and just see what comes from it. When I go into a stone circle, I will always ask permission to be there as I’m walking on sacred ground. A lot of it is going into the silence and listening to what the land has to say.

My Spiritual Inheritance
Looking back over the ages, I would say I was part of the heritage of ‘the old ways’: feeling the energy, watching for birds returning, seeing where they are nesting.
The ancient Britons – builders of Stonehenge, Avebury and so on – flowed with nature, with the time of the year, when to harvest, where to be, when to go somewhere, but modern minds think ‘It’s Monday morning, I’ve got to start work’ whereas the old ways would feel into the energies to know when to start or if they needed some extra rest, or if a storm was coming, so the energy of nature would guide them through life.
With the Druids, there was such a significant connection to me right away. The Druids, the old ways, going with the flow and letting spiritual energy lead – it called me on every level. It’s linking in to the energy of the earth. There is an excitement within me when I start working with this energy which seems totally limitless and unbounded. It’s just continuous. When I do my ancient Celtic healing work, the energy comes through me and its enormous. When you learn to follow the energy, then the practicalities of life become much easier. It’s about listening to the feeling rather than the logical mind. Good things will just happen seemingly by accident and will take you to places you never expected to be, when you follow the energy instead of the logical mind.
My Calling
I was 11 when I began meditating. My mother had taken up Transcendental Meditation and I learned it soon after. And the minute I started it, it was beautiful. I didn’t have words for it but it just opened up this want for more of it. It was such a lovely energy that came through me. I think I’d always been looking for these in-depth old ways. And once I had some spiritual training, it felt so different and unique in what came through, that it just kept drawing me in further and further. It felt very insistent. In the nicest way, in the most beautiful way, there was not a choice. For me, spirituality has never been a weekend course, it’s a way of life.

An Unfolding Wisdom
Modern life is hectic but also brings many beautiful things, and it can also snatch our time, expecting us to keep working very long hours without rest. The old ways remind me to find a balance, to rest and relax and live in wonder with the world and all its beauty and not to miss out.
